British documentary Chemsex is a fascinating and honest insight into the lives of modern gay men who engage in weekend-long, drug-fuelled orgies, a.k.a. ‘chemsex’ or ‘wired fun’.
A hugely prevalent trend in London’s gay scene, chemsex holds a dangerous allure – a heightened sexual experience, with the threat of drug abuse and disease looming behind it.
This documentary follows a group of individuals as they speak frankly and openly about their many and varied experiences with chemsex in a judgement-free environment. In their most secret admissions we hear harrowing stories of deaths by overdose in saunas, tantalising tales of sexual adventure, and sad confessions of a lonely lifestyle.
From hookup apps and websites to stark discussions around intimacy and addiction, health risks and HIV, Chemsex holds nothing back. It offers untouched, gritty and sometimes confronting points of view from a variety of lives within the London chemsex scene.
It’s showing at Event Cinemas, George St tonight (Wednesday, March 2) as part of the Mardi Gras Film Festival. You can purchase tickets here.
